Medical Receptionist

Toome Surgery seek to recruit a 

Hours of work: 25 hours / 3 days (Mon-Fri)

On site parking


Duties: (on a rota basis)

  • Meet and greet all patients at the front desk with a warm and courteous welcome.

  • Answer high volume of telephone calls

  • Process prescriptions; file and hand out prescriptions to patients

  • General Administration (filing, post, scanning, etc.)

  • Operation and maintenance of the computer systems

  • Throughout the working day, these duties may interchange according to the needs of the practice and patients.  Other duties may be added as required.


Essential Criteria:

  • GCSE English language (Grade A-C or equivalent)

  • Fully computer literate

  • Excellent communication & organizational skills

  • Ensuring absolute confidentiality is maintained at all times

  • Able to screen calls and direct to the correct department

  • Book appointments with the appropriate clinician

  • Flexibility

  • Working as part of a team & use own initiative.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience working as a medical receptionist / working in a health care setting / working with the general public

  • Use of clinical systems

Practice Nurse with interest in Diabetes

Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced Practice Nurse to join our Practice in Coleraine. The role will involve providing clinical assessment and management of chronic medical conditions with a particular focus on diabetes.

Job responsibilities

  • Be involved in the assessment, management and treatment of chronic health conditions such as Diabetes, Asthma, COPD and Hypertension.

  • The role will involve a particular focus on the management and support of patients with diabetes. This will involve running diabetes clinics (with GP support).

  • Cervical screening clinics.

  • Immunisations

  • Assisting the Practice in meeting targets for the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF).

  • Diligence in record keeping.

  • Working as part of a team involving doctors, nurses, receptionists and treatment room staff.

  • Maintain clinical knowledge and be motivated to pursue independent study in line with perpetually evolving clinical guidelines.

This Job Description will be subject to review in light of changing circumstances and may include other duties as determined by the General Practitioners. The post holder must practice under the NMC code of conduct and scope of professional practice. Requirements under Post Registration Education and Practice must be met. We expect all staff to comply with our no smoking policy and dress code. We are an equal opportunities employer.




  • Full registration with NMC.

  • Qualified RGN.

  • Relevant post-registration diabetes course


  • Diplomas in other chronic health conditions such as Asthma or COPD.

  • Other post-registration qualifications or training.

Knowledge and Experience


  • Experience of working and supporting patients with diabetes. This includes;

    • Assessing patients with diabetes and implementing treatment regimes.

    • Monitoring the effect of treatment and making necessary changes.

    • Providing education and information on diabetes including risk factors, lifestyle changes and common issues with treatment and medications.  

  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.



  • Experience in other chronic health conditions such as Asthma, COPD or cervical screening.

  • Experience in immunisation programmes or clinics.

  • Awareness of current developments in General Practice.

  • Knowledge of General practice systems and administration such as Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) and enhanced services.
