A note from the Chair - Dr Johnny Burns

Colleagues

I hope this finds you well.

We have now received confirmation that our MDT rollout will be completed and funded in-year. This will be at a new ratio of Social Workers, so some remodelling is required — however, a plan exists for this which our leads are content with.

Regarding MDT, there will be changes to both Federation and Practice payments.

We are currently unsure of the exact impact, but we are aware this will result in a reduction of funding. This is being strongly resisted at Steering Group level, and we will keep you fully informed of any changes.

We continue to review our current resources — in particular our GPPs — and assess whether we are in a position to support further recruitment, with the aim of helping Practices through improved backfill and maternity cover.

Many thanks for your ongoing support.

Johnny

🧠 SMHPs Begin Single-Session Therapy (SST) Training 🧠

The SMHPs are excited to announce the start of their Single-Session Therapy (SST) training!

This approach encourages practitioners to enter the first session with the mindset that it could be the patient’s last session—regardless of diagnosis, complexity, or severity of issues. The great thing about SST is that it highlights how everyone can benefit from a single encounter, no matter what challenges they’re facing.

The SMHPs will be equipped with the essential skills and knowledge to assist patients effectively in just one session, emphasising a client-centred and goal-oriented approach. The focus is on making the most out of this single encounter—whether it tackles a specific issue or acts as a stepping stone toward further therapy.

🎯 Outcome Goals of Single-Session Therapy:

  • Help patients get ‘unstuck’ and find a way forward

  • Empower clients to take meaningful steps that may allow them to continue without ongoing professional assistance

We’re here to support patients in discovering new possibilities for their mental health journey. 💬

🧠 Practice-Based Learning: A Hit at Ballymoney Health Centre!

ree

In March, our two SMHPs at Ballymoney Health Centre hosted a fantastic Practice-Based Learning session, centred around the HSC Take 5 Steps to Wellbeing [www.mindyourhead.info].

Louise McKechnie and Alanna O’Hanlon delivered an engaging session packed with educational insights, practical tips, and interactive games to encourage staff participation.

They explored the five key steps to wellbeing, with a focus on:

  • Connection

  • Keep Learning

  • Giving

Mindfulness was championed as a key way to Take Notice, and Adam Wilson (FCP) demonstrated effective stretching exercises, highlighting the value of regular movement to Be Active.

💬 Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing the afternoon as “a hit”! Staff left feeling empowered and motivated to integrate these wellbeing strategies into their daily lives.

👏 It’s fantastic to see our Primary Care MDTs coming together to champion mental health and wellbeing. Here's to fostering a supportive and healthier environment in primary care!

Autism Café at the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre 🌟

At the beginning of April, SMHP Alanna O’Hanlon and MDT SW Jolene Kean had the pleasure of representing the Primary Care MDTs at a fantastic Autism Café held at the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre in Ballymoney.

This wonderful event was organised by the Children and Young People’s Strategic Partnership (CYPSP), with the goal of enhancing knowledge and understanding of Autism in children while also providing invaluable support for children, families, carers, and the professionals involved in their care.

During the event, Alanna and Jolene shared insights about the MDT services available at GP practices throughout the Causeway Area. They guided attendees—ranging from agencies, parents, carers, and professionals like teachers—on navigating the referral process for Autism assessments. Additionally, they highlighted resources and support services available to those waiting for diagnoses and to those with confirmed diagnoses, both locally and through online platforms.

👏 The Autism Café turned out to be a huge success!

MDT - First Contact Physiotherapists

Suzanne Kennedy - Consultant Physiotherapist

🏥At Long Last

After a long-awaited announcement, it looks like First Contact Physiotherapists (FCPs) will be rolling out — alongside Mental Health Practitioners — into the East Antrim Federation. Talks and preparations have taken place to ensure we can facilitate this when the funding is released.

Further interviews will be taking place next month, as we need over 15 whole-time equivalent FCPs for East Antrim over the next four years.

🧪 Research

First Contact Physiotherapists in Causeway are participating in a regional research study:

"Exploring Complexity of Patients Presenting to First Contact Physiotherapists in Primary Care in Northern Ireland."

🎓 Good Luck

Good luck to Ethan, Paula, and Vikki on the final part of their Non-Medical Prescribing course.

Thank you to the GPs who supported them on this journey—your time invested should be very beneficial to the practice.

💚 Health Promotion

The MDT has been promoting Take 5 Steps to Wellbeing for staff in Ballymoney Family Practice.

The Take 5 model is a generic set of actions that are both evidence-based and wide-ranging. The key messages focus on:

  • Social relationships

  • Physical activity

  • Awareness

  • Learning

  • Giving

The aim is to prompt people into thinking about these areas of their lives and how to incorporate them into their routines.

Adam Wilson, alongside MDT colleagues, delivered this message during a Practice-Based Learning Afternoon. He is also promoting physical activity by leading a walking group for all abilities every Wednesday lunchtime in the practice.

🦴 Osteoporosis Information Evening

Lyn Gordon had a great turnout at a local Women’s Institute Information Evening on osteoporosis. She informed attendees about bone health and led a chair exercise programme to encourage self-management.

ree

📊 Staff Survey Results

The results of the MDT staff survey have been published, with a very high response from Causeway staff.

The regional report was largely positive, with the majority of MDT staff agreeing that MDTs have had a strong impact on themselves, their patients, Primary and Secondary Care, and the wider health care system. The findings will help shape future service planning and development of MDTs.

📈View survey highlights

  • 86% (n=208) felt the MDT is an effective team that has brought about positive culture change within Primary Care

  • 70% (n=172) would recommend an MDT role to a friend or colleague

MDT - Social Work

Elizabeth Craig - Social Work Lead

🤝 Collaborative Working

There continues to be significant partnership working across all sectors.

Causeway GP Federation MDT Social Work used seed funding to develop dementia wristbands in collaboration with the PSNI and Age Concern. These wristbands feature a QR code that enables quick access to a person’s details if they go missing and are unable to communicate due to cognitive impairment. This invaluable tool is being actively promoted by all involved agencies. The initiative was highly commended in the Problem Solving category at the annual PSNI Awards.

GP Elective Care Services

Dr Conor Gorman - Deputy Clinical Director for Elective Care

Good News - Gynaecology Service.

We are pleased to let everyone know that our Women's Health (Gynaecology) Service has secured recurrent funding with capacity being brought back up to what it was before the funding cuts.

This will result in significantly shorter waiting times for patients to access the service after referral from GP. We would thus encourage all our colleagues in Primary Care to consider referring to this service again. Referral criteria remain the same. We will be promoting this regionally over the coming weeks, EA being first to know:)

We are continuing to lobby and negotiate for recurrent funding of our other services- MSK, Dermatology and Skin Surgery and will hopefully have news on these over next months.

We have also completed a proof of concept pilot for management of Low Risk BCC within primary care, operating on over a hundred patients with BCC. We are hoping that this will lead to a service being commissioned. Big thank you to the EA clinicians and admin team who worked with us on this.

Finally, we would like to thank all our Host Practice Admin Teams , EFSU and our clinicians for their continued efforts and support to sustain the services through the last few bleak years. As well as our appreciation of all our GP colleagues who have continued to refer into the services.

🏫 Medical Admin Training Academy

7 of the 9 participants - alongside trainer, Linda.

We are delighted with how our first ever Medical Administrative Training Academy has gone over the past 5 weeks and look forward to the remaining few weeks with the participants.

All the trainers and NFSU staff have found it a pleasure welcoming, working with, and supporting the 9 participants to further develop their admin skills to ensure they are much better placed to apply for and succeed in medical administration opportunities on successful completion of the academy.

Each of the participants has fully committed to the training, with a 98% attendance rate, no financial contribution required to complete the academy, and 4 of them travelling as far as Carrickfergus to our NFSU offices twice a week to attend. We feel that this demonstrates their eagerness and commitment already at this early stage.

Given the feedback to date, we are hoping to be in a position to build upon this pilot initiative by duplicating similar academies in other Federations. It is paramount that our member practices collectively support these academies if we are to scale this model.

We would like to sincerely thank the member practices who have kindly supported this pilot academy.
